For many years, the Grand Strand has been decimated by out-of- control developers, in conjunction with landed gentry heirs, looking to make a killing on Grand Strand real estate. Our infrastructure cannot support this.
Overcrowded streets, overcrowded schools, increased crime, disappearing greenery, flooding and a serious decline in our quality of living are the result.
These issues are made exponentially worse by an Horry County Council dominated by real estate interests and attorneys whose primary source of income is real estate. transactions.
The situation is primarily funded by your tax dollars much of which are directly transferred to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (MBACC)
MBACC receives +/-$50 million of tax dollars each year ostensibly to promote the Grand Strand as a tourist destination for out-of-state tourists.
MBACC maintains a number of PACs , via the Grand Strand Alliance, which are totally open about supporting political candidates that further its own interests, not yours.
MBACC also awards business contracts to local entities that are on board with its interests and these people, in turn, support candidates that support them. Quid Pro Quo.
Another factor related to the MBACC is that it covertly supports former Democrats who changed parties, at least nominally, in order to get elected.
In the past few months, it has become clear that the MBACC will have to reveal its true Democratic colors since many of the old guard are cashing in their MBACC assets to private investors from New York, Los Angeles and Charleston, hardly bastions of Republican support.
The Horry County Republican Party will no doubt do what it can to make sure that Horry County, and SC, do not go blue but they are limited in what they can do.
Anyone familiar with local politics knows that the primaries are more important than the general election. HCGOP is constrained from providing campaign financing to primary candidates.
The MBACC has no such constraints.
